Some people are born with congenial defects of the lip. In such a situation cheiloplasty surgery is required. In some botched up cases of lip enhancement also lip reduction surgery becomes a necessity. Some people have very prominent thick lips because of genetic and racial factors. They opt for lip reduction surgery for an aesthetically better look of the mouth as well as overall personality. In case of injury to the lip and consequent abnormal healing scabs on the lips also surgery is preferred. In some cases this procedure is opted for aesthetic reasons while in some other case like cleft lips it becomes a medical necessity. But a few points to be noted for the success of this surgical procedure.

Point 1
The first important point is of course selection of the doctor. Find one near your place of residence as there may be more than one visits required for consultation.
Ask his previous patients about their satisfaction level. This will give you an indication of the efficiency of the doctor.

After finding a physician, they can than schedule a consultation. During the initial consultation the patient has to disclose any medication he or she is using and the surgeon must go over in detail the procedure being done. He must also include the time it will take to heal and any after care instructions. At this time, the patient also needs to go over what result they expect from the surgeon. The surgeon will explain if he can meet these expectations and what to expect after the surgery is completed.

A few days before the actually surgery the patient goes again to the surgeon to discuss any other things that might come up. This is called the preoperative appointment. The surgeon will also discuss the preoperative care and after care routine that you must follow and prescribe any medications or antibiotics needed. This is the most crucial and important as at this stage you have to take the final decision.

If you are satisfied about the necessity of the procedure and has decided on the surgeon to perform the surgery the next step is actually the surgery done by the doctor.
The surgery is usually done under a local anesthesia and takes around 20 minutes for each lip. The surgeon removes a strip of skin from one or both of the lips, to balance the lip area out. If it is a lip corrective surgery then the doctor will use skin from other part of your body for lip reconstruction. After the surgery it can take from 7 to 14 days to heal fully. In some cases, stitches might have to be removed after 10 days depending on the type of sutures that were used.

Post operative care is as usual the deciding factor for recovery as well as the desired result. Like any other surgery, lip reduction has risks. Patients are at risk of getting a bacterial infection and may be allergic to the anesthesia. After surgery the lip area may also become numb. Usually this goes away. But in a small percentage of people it is permanent.
